Directions
to Schuyler Co., NY Cemeteries
Many thanks
to William E. Fenton who provided these directions
&
maps after an exhaustive search of the county.
The names of the cemeteries were obtained from
several sources in the
files at the Schuyler Co.
Historical Society. Some cemeteries have had
several
different names; the most common name was used in the alphabetical
list below. Cemeteries not accurately located are
noted.
Some Cemeteries are not suitable for a single
tourist to go to.

Go West on State Rt 230 for .5 miles
from the Hallock Road intersection. There is a house and barns on the
left side (south) of the road. We drove .4 miles (up a hill) out a
farm lane that went between the house and barn and the cem’ is
in a clump of trees and brush on the right side of that farm lane.
You can see the clump of trees and brush from the main road but, you
can not see the gravestones. There is the remains of a stone fence
around the cem but that is not visible from the road.
BARNES CEMETERY (CHAFFEE
CEM)..........................................CAYUTA
This
is on the south side of Rt 224 (east of Cayuta) almost to the county
line. Going east watch for a farm with a long low building on the
left side of the road. On the right watch for the small green survey
signs along the road. The top line says “224”, the middle
says “6302” and the bottom line is “1003”. If
you park by that sign there is an open field on the right. The
cemetery is in the brush and trees at the southeast corner of that
field. Visited on 9-24-1996 and it is overgrown and difficult to get
thru.

Road go south to the last house on the left before the bridge over
Curry Creek. These are the people who own the property the cemetery

on the north side of the creek and someone keeps the brush cut out of
it. Visited on Oct 14, 1996.

This is very difficult to locate. Go north out of Logan on
Co Rt 4 and turn right on the Ball Diamond road. Go to the end of
that road and it is the Wardner Corners Road on the left and an
abandoned road on the right. Park there and walk to the right on the
abandoned road for about .1 mile and there is a creek that crosses
the road. Follow the right side of the creek to the west thru two
abandoned pastures and watch to the right for four trees in a clump
in the middle of a field. At the present there is a barbed wire fence
around the trees to keep the cattle out of the cemetery.
BRAZIER-HAYES
FARM....................................................................ORANGE
From the Sugar Hill Road go south on Maple Lane Road to the
first Snowmobile/horse trail (about .5 miles) that crosses the road.
(This is a seasonal use road and in poor shape). There are small
signs on the trees for the trail. Walk to the right (west) on the
trail up the hill until it veers sharply to the right. Leave the
trail and walk straight up the hill (west) and the cemetery is near
the top of the hill and a little to the right. There is a modern type
chain link fence around the cemetery. All stones checked Oct 5, 1998
by W E Fenton & R M Page. Visited Oct 1998

CEMETERY................................................................HECTOR
This cemetery is on the north side of the Mott Evans Road

No stones exist since it was a poor house, but I
visited the site in April 1997 with people from the area and one man
who lives at the end of Mott Evans road said that he was told the
cemetery was in the grove of trees that we searched. There were three
depressions in the ground that are not natural and so I assume that
this was the site.

REYNOLDS
PLOT................................................................................HECTOR
This is one stone. From Reynoldsville go east on Rt 227 for
1.7 miles from the intersection of the Voorhies or Stage Road
intersection. On the left side (North) of the road set way back in a
field is a log house presently owned by Mark & Terry Welch. The
gravesite is 100 to 150 to the northeast of the house in a clump of
trees. Visited in March 1997
REYNOLDSVILLE
CEM......................................................................HECTOR
On west side of Reynoldsville on the southwest side of
Potomac Road. This is overgrown and difficult to get thru.
ROBBINS
PLOT...................................................................................ORANGE
From Co Rt 16 go north on Co Rt 21 to the intersection of
the Templar Road. Walk west on Co Rt 21 for about 62 paces from the
stop sign. The cemetery is on the south side of the road on a small
knoll in thick brush. There is only two stones and the small one for
Sidney is the only one standing.
ST. MARY’S
CEMETERY....................................................................DIX
This is on the west end of Glenwood Cemetery in Watkins
Glen.
SCHUYLER CEMETERY (F J ROOT FARM
CEM).........................ORANGE
On the west side of
Co Rt 22 .25 miles from Co Rt 16 across a field from Co Rt 22.
SEARSBURG
CEMETERY..................................................................HECTOR
From the Searsburg Road (Co Rt 1) turn south on the Burr
Road and go .15 miles. The cemetery is on the right in the woods
approx. 50-60 yards. I was there in April 1998 and we only found
three stones. The old records had said that it was believed that
there were “Propers” buried there. There was evidence of
many more graves and maybe the stones were moved to the Jones Cem
which is near.
SIX-NATIONS CEMETERY (PINE CREEK RD
CEM)....................ORANGE
On the south side of
Kelly Hill Rd just off Co Rt 22.
STRADER
CEMETERY.......................................................................HECTOR
On the north side of Covert Road. From the Logan Road (Co Rt
4) go up the Covert Road to the first driveway on the right (across
from the old one room school). That driveway goes to a moble home and
there is a garage or small barn next to that. The cemetery is
directly north of that building. It is in the brush and woods just
out of sight of that building. I visited this on Nov 7, 1996 and
found that most of the stones have eroded away.
SUGAR HILL CEM
(NEW)..................................................................ORANGE
On northwest corner of Locust Lane and Co Rt 21.
SUGAR HILL CEM
(OLD)..................................................................ORANGE
On the east side of Evergreen Hill Rd .2 miles from Sugar
Hill Raod. Look for a driveway going up a hill. Cemetery is about 180
paces up the hill and not visible from the main road. Maintained but
not being used. Many graves are not marked.
SWAN HILL
ROAD..............................................................................CATHARINE
This cemetery is difficult to find and is on a seasonal use
road. It is not practical for a stranger to this are to go to it.
From Alpine go out Swan Hill Road .7 miles. This will be a short
distance past a “Connecticut Hill Management” sign. There
is a parking area on the right side of the road. Park there and walk
back across the road to the northwest side. You have to walk up a
steep hill going back toward Alpine (Parallel to the Road) for about
150 yards. At that point the cemetery is to your right on up the hill
a short distance. There are two groups of stone and there is evidence
of graves with no markers. Visited on 9-24-1996.
SWITZER
CEMETERY.........................................................................ORANGE
Gone now - no records exist. Suppose to have been near the
corner of Switzer Hill Road and Fish Hill Road.
TOWNSEND
CEMETERY....................................................................DIX
On the east side of Townsend Road (north of Townsend) .3
miles from Co Rt 16. Mowed but not trimmed.
TYRONE UNION
CEMETERY............................................................TYRONE
Off Cemetery Road southwest of Tyrone Villiage. Road is .4
miles west of the middle of the villiage.
VALOIS CEMETERY / SENECA UNION
CEMETERY....................HECTOR
Seneca Union is the
correct name but everyone has always called this the Valois Cemetery.
On the east side of State Rt 414 just north of Valois.
VANDORN FARM
PLOT.....................................................................HECTOR
Cemetery no longer exists. See the records.
VANLONE HILL
CEM.........................................................................CATHARINE
Very difficult to find. The roads are seasonal use roads and
not in good shape. Starting in Alpine go out Swan Hill Rd to the end
and turn left, go only a short distance and take the first right
(Todd Rd), follow that road out until there is a road going to the
west (School House Road). Follow that road until you see a building
foundation on the left. That is the old school house. Turn around and
go back a short distance to a culvert in the road - at the present
there are posts beside the road by the culvert. Go into the woods to
the right - south - and find an old abandoned road. Follow that down
the hill until it turns sharply to the right. The cemetery is in the
tall old pine trees if you walk ahead and don’t turn right. I
do not think it practical for a stranger to go to this cemetery
without some local person with them.
WARDEN CEMETERY (WARREN
CEM).........................................ORANGE
On
the southeast side of Co Rt 16 .2 miles southwest of Sexton Hollow
Rd. About 100 yards off the road in a hedgerow, look for a tall
monument. Overgrown but accessible.
WAYNE BAPTIST CHURCH
CEM......................................................TYRONE
On the north side of Rt 230 just east of the middle of the
village.
WESTON CEMETERY (FRANK WOOD FARM) (HEALD
CEM).......TYRONE
Go west out of Weston on Co Rt 23.
Just before the canan between Lake Lamoka and Lake Waneta is a
parking area. If you park in that area walk out of the parking area
toward the large house on the hill.Just out of the parking area is a
driveway going thru brush, walk out that and you will be in an open
field. Across the field is a large grove of trees. That is the
cemetery, stones can be seen if the leaves are off the brush. Part of
it has been cleared of brush but the rest of it is very difficult to
get thru.
